New doc at Olea article that appeared in the Wasaga beach Sun on July 19th 2012
WASAGA BEACH – Naturopathic doctor Catherine Howes has joined Olea Health in Wasaga Beach.
Howes, 32, made the unlikely transition from archeology to medicine while on a journey that took her all over the world.
She said she was first exposed to holistic medicine 10 years ago through a natural healer, closer to home, in Caledon and continued to learn about natural and traditional medicine during her travels as an archeologist.
Howes earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biological anthropology and archeological science at the University of Toronto. Her work in the field took her to South America, Europe and Alaska.
She has also traveled through Asia and as a student at Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto she traveled twice to Nicaragua to do volunteer medical work.
After graduating from the four-year program as an accredited naturopathic doctor, Howes practiced at a clinic in the Sarnia area for one year before moving back to the area to be closer to her family.
Howes said she decided to study natural medicine after learning about it in her travels and after dealing with health issues of her own and those of her family members.
“I like the idea of an emphasis on natural alternatives,” said Howes. “The goal is to optimize patient care using every resource that’s available to you.”
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct, integrated system of primary health care practiced by licensed physicians, which blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic philosophy is based on the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself and that symptoms of disease are warning signs of improper functioning of the body, said Howes.
Howes will be working at Olea Health on Wednesdays, Fridays and every other Saturday. Filling in for Monika Lukacena, the naturopathic doctor that owns the clinic, who is working reduced hours after the birth of her son.
“I cannot believe it has been more than four years since I first opened Olea Health in Wasaga Beach. I have been so pleased with the interest in naturopathic medicine in the local community as well as the surrounding area. Supporting local professionals allows us to offer unique health care and educate our community on disease prevention and healthy living. Thank you so much for all your support. We are excited to welcome Dr. Catherine Howes to the team. She has so much to offer to the clinic and to the local community. We look forward to seeing her practice grow,” said Lukacena.
The plan is to grow the practice and Howes will stay on as the patient load increases.
Howes specializes in women’s health, hormonal issues, digestive issues, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, insomnia, stress and depression, allergies and asthma, anti-aging, detoxification, recurrent infections, medication and supplement concerns and wellness check-ups.
